Dhak Dhak film review:
Director: Tarun Dudeja
Key actors: Ratna Pathak, Sanjana Sanghi, Dia Mirza, Fatima Sana Shaikh
Duration: 2 hours 20 minutes
Story of 'Dhak Dhak' :
The story of ‘Dhak Dhak’ is about four women – Sky, Mahi, Uzma and Manjari. They hail from different background. Sky (played by Fatima Sana Shaikh) is a Youtuber with an affection for bikes, travelling, etc. She just came off a messy break-up. She gets an unlikely ally in the form of Manpreet Kaur Sethi a.k.a. Mahi (played by Ratna Pathak Shah)- a grandmother. Uzma (played by Dia Mirza)- is an unappreciated homemaker. And Manjari (played by Sanjana Sanghi)- is a simple girl from Mathura, who is going to get married reluctantly.
They are not natural bikers. However, they embark on their journey from Delhi to Ladakh. On the way, sometimes they struggle, and sometimes they get excited. They also meet a few good samaritans like -the tourist Moshe (Benedict Garrett) who saves Mahi’s life in high altitude, the nun who moonlights as a kung-fu teacher, and the Sardarji who helps Manjari find her co-travelers. Overall, ‘Dhak Dhak’ is about their experience, adventure, and equations with one another as they take a transformative trip.
Characters of the film 'Dhak Dhak' :
Pros :
The story of ‘Dhak Dhak’ is narrated well- there is a natural, unhindered flow to the words and the storytelling in this film. Each of the women has a reason to leave their comfort zone. It shows their struggles as well as their willingness to overcome them, in a refreshing way.
Ratna Pathak as a loving and cheeky grandmother, Fatima Sana Sheikh as a firebrand girl, Dia Mirza as a “jugadu mechanic” with stifled dreams, and Sanjana Sanghi as an overprotected simple girl- are simply fantastic in their respective characters. There are a few scenes of laughter, owing to Mahi and Manjari’s shenanigans- which makes the movie more enjoyable.
Cinematographer S. Damodar has portrayed the picturesque mountains, roads, rough terrains, landslides, flooding, etc in a captivating way. The music by Rishi Dutta is quite charming, especially the song ‘Banjara Re’ remains in mind even after walking out of the theater.
Cons:
‘Dhak Dhak’ never hits full speed- the pace at which the story unfolds could have been faster.
In female-bonding films of Bollywood such as ‘Veere Di Wedding'(2018), ‘Aisha’, generally we see a quartet. This film is also not an exception. The director could have opted for three or five female characters, but he maintained the cliché.
Conclusion:
Apparently, ‘Dhak Dhak’ is the story of four ordinary unhappy women finding shared joy in a road trip to the highest point in Ladakh through the world’s highest pass- the Khardung La.
It is not just a road trip, for them- it’s a journey of self-discovery and identity as well. The turn of events in the story is so refreshing. This adventurous journey of women is a must-watch.
