As we know, Bollywood has a long tradition of borrowing ideas from Hollywood and sometimes from regional movie industries. However, Bollywood sometimes turn to its own movies to make the remade versions of them. Many such remakes did not work well. But a few remade movies have been received well by the audience. Here are a few examples of Bollywood remakes – both good and bad.
Bollywood remakes of old films:
Karz
Director Subhash Ghai’s Karz was a blockbuster in 1980. Rishi Kapoor was praised for his role in this musical fim. Not only the songs were fantastic, but also was the story of the movie.
Karzzzz
Yes there are four Z’s at the end of the movie’s name. Just like the weird spelling, this movie is weird as well. Himesh Reshamiya is nowhere close to Rishi Kapoor in terms of acting and charisma. Urmila Matondkar could not pull any crowd either. Karzzzz is one of the bizarre movies in 2008 with insipid songs like ‘Tandoori Night’.
Umrao Jaan(1981)
The original Umrao Jaan was released in 1981. That movie was directed by Muzaffar Ali and Rekha played the title character. The movie impressed the audience and earned almost Rs 90 lakh which was huge sum at that time.
Umrao Jaan(2006)
The remade one was released in 2006 starring Aishwarya Rai in the lead role. Though the movie was directed by renowned director J.P. Dutta, it did not possess the charm of the original one.
Sholey
Director Ramesh Sippy’s Sholey does not need any introduction where Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra played the characters of Jai and Veeru respectively. Sholey ran on many theaters for as long as five years. This movies earned Rs 30 crose in 1975.
Aag
The remade version is named Aag where only one cast of the original one is appeared. Here, Amitabh is playing the role of villain. Ram Gopal Verma’s Aag is utter disaster and it earned only Rs 7 crore in 2007.
Zanjeer(1973)
Zanjeer is one of the best movies of Amitabh Bachchan. In 1973, Amitabh impressed both the critics and audience by his acting in this movie. He played the character of a policeman in this action drama.
Zanjeer(2013)
Directed by Apoorva Lakhia, the remade Zanjeer starring Telugu superstar Ram Charan did not do well in the Box Office and managed to collect around only Rs 14 crore. Priyanka Chopra played the female lead role in this movie.
Devdas(1955)
In 1955, Dilip Kumar, Vyjayantimala starrer Devdas was a commendable adaptation of the novel ‘Devdas’ written by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay. In this movie, the self destruction of a lover named Devdas was aptly presented.
Devdas(2002)
In 2002, when Sanjay Leela Bhansali made ‘Devdas’, the comparison of his movie with that of 1955 was inevitable. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has made the movie so well that it might be regarded as his magnum opus. Shahrukh-Aishwarya-Madhuri trio did not only justice to the characters but also elevated their status in the eyes of audience. This ‘Devdas’ is undoubtedly the best remake of Bollywood’s own classic films.
Agneepath(1990)
In 1990, Amitabh Bachchan consolidated his status as ‘angry young man’ through his role as Vijay Dinanath Chauhan in Agneepath. This movie is considered as an epic in Bollywood.
Agneepath(2012)
Almost after two decades, Hrithik Roshan played the same character in Agneepath directed by Karan Malhotra. Sanjay Dutt was also praised for his acting in the role of Kancha Cheena. This Agneepath went on to become one of best movies of 2012.
