Sequels and spin-offs are quite common in Hollywood, and this trend has been going on for quite a long time. However, Bollywood is not so far behind in this regard.
In the last few decades, we have seen many Bollywood films with cliffhanger endings or open-ended curtain closes. Some movies leave some questions unanswered, which can definitely spawn sequels.
In this article, you will find Bollywood movies that should have sequels.
7 Hindi films that deserve sequel:
1. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
- Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin, Farhan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif
- Director: Zoya Akhtar
- Genre: Drama, Bromance
- Release: 2011
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is considered one of the best bromance movies of Bollywood. Here, three friends Kabir (played by Abhay), Imran (played by Farhan), and Arjun (played by Hrithik) take a vacation in Spain after Kabir is engaged to Natasha (played by Kalki Koechlin). The trip allows them to fall in love with life, amend ties, heal wounds, etc.
The movie turned out to be so good that the audiences would love to see them again, and there is enough scope for expanding their story.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Hrithik expressed his eagerness for a sequel and said, “It would be set five-six years from now. Arjun, Imran, and Kabir are older, evolved, and have settled down. They’re in a different stage in their lives and in a different state of mind. But there are new problems and a reason to go off on another trip together.”
2. Baadshah
- Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Twinkle Khanna, Johnny Lever, Amrish Puri, Rakhee Gulzar
- Director: Abbas-Mustan
- Genre: Comedy, Action
- Release: 1999
Baadshah is an action comedy movie starring Shah Rukh Khan as Raj Babulal Rai, a.k.a. Baadshah, who is a not-so-famous private detective. In this film, Baadshah goes to rescue a little girl. But, he gets drawn into a political conspiracy due to mistaken identity. Eventually, he saves Gayatri Bachchan, the Chief Minister of Goa, and that little girl. This movie has suspense, action, and comedy – all in a balanced amount. So, if a sequel is made, the audience could see Baadshah and his incompetent associates on another mission. Just imagine!
3. Taxi No. 9211
- Cast: Nana Patekar, Sameera Reddy,
John Abraham, Sonali Kulkarni - Director: Milan Luthria
- Genre: Drama, Comedy
- Release: 2006
The movie’s story is about a taxi driver, Raghu (played by Patekar), and a rich brat, Jai (played by John) who lost the key to his father’s vault in the taxi of Raghu. Then they wreak havoc in each other’s lives. In the end, we see how Jai learns the value of loved ones, instead of wealth.
In 2006, sequels were not common. Perhaps, that’s why the maker did not make a sequel despite having an open-ended climax.
This movie was way ahead of its time, but we can still expect a sequel to this movie starring Priyanka Chopra, who was at the end hinting at the beginning of a new romantic relationship.
4. 36 China Town
- Cast: Akshaye Khanna, Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Payal Rohatgi, Upen Patel, Johny Lever, Tannaz Irani, Isha Koppikar
- Director: Abbas-Mustan
- Genre: Mystery, Comedy
- Release: 2006
In this crime comedy thriller, a wealthy casino owner Sonia Chang (played by Isha Koppikar) is murdered at her residence 36 China Town. Chief Inspector Karan Kapoor investigates the murder case which involves multiple suspects. There is suspense and comedy at the same throughout the movie, and the climax is very surprising. In this movie, the acting of Akshaye Khanna is quite fascinating. Makers should make a sequel to this movie with a new crime with the same cast. Who would not love watching Akshaye in action again as Chief Inspector Karan Kapoor?
5. A Gentleman
- Cast: Sidharth Malhotra, Jacqueline Fernandez, Suniel Shetty, Darshan Kumaar
- Director: Raj & DK
- Genre: Action, Suspense, Romance
- Release: 2017
A Gentleman is probably one of the most underrated Bollywood movies. In this film, Sidharth is playing the character Gaurav/Rishi. Col. Saxena (played by Suniel Shetty) is Rishi’s handler turned enemy who is trying to eliminate Rishi. In this cat-and-mouse chase, there is suspense, thrill, and of course, some timely comedy.
Though there was no cliffhanging climax, there could be a sequel to the film where Sidharth and Jacqueline (as Kavya) can be seen fighting together for survival or something else. The movie-makers may uncover Rishi’s enigmatic past to the audience. The directors should give it a shot.
6. Dhak Dhak
- Cast: Ratna Pathak, Sanjana Sanghi, Dia Mirza, Fatima Sana Shaikh
- Director: Karan Dudeja
- Genre: Drama, Adventure
- Release: 2023
Dhak Dhak is about four women – Sky (played by Fatima Sana Shaikh), Mahi (played by Ratna Shah), Uzma (played by Dia Mirza), and Manjari (played by Sanjana). They hail from different backgrounds and embark on a road trip on motorcycles from Delhi to Ladakh. They are not natural bikers, but all have other reasons to leave their comfort zones and go on an adventurous journey. Director Tarun Dudeja has portrayed their trip as not just a road journey but also as a journey of self-discovery.
Though the movie is not a cliffhanger, there is ample scope to portray what happens next, and it would be exciting to see the four women embarking on a new trip again.
7. Ittefaq
- Cast: Akshaye Khanna, Sidharth Malhotra, Sonakshi Sinha
- Director: Abhay Chopra
- Genre: Thriller
- Release: 2017
Another detective-oriented movie on our list, but this one does not have comedy. In Ittefaq, Detective Dev Verma (played by Akshaye Khanna) investigates a double murder case that has two witnesses – Vikram Sethi and Maya, and both of them are suspects. After investigation, a conclusion is drawn based on evidence. However, Detective Verma soon realizes how they have duped but the true criminal is set free and on the way to a foreign country. This climax can easily spawn another part where the real murderer can be seen captured and brought to justice.
Bollywood movies are evolving and makers are becoming innovative. Hence, we can expect more and more sequels of successful films. By and large, detective movies and comedy movies tend to have more scopes to spawn sequels. In this post, we have listed the films that are good enough, and have a better chance of producing sequels.
