Movies based on historical heroes possess a unique attraction. Such movies give the audience a chance to connect with history and heritage. ‘Bagha Jatin’ definitely falls into such category of movies as it is based on the life of Bagha Jatin, a freedom fighter who fought for the independence of India in the early 20th century.

Story:
The story of ‘Bagha Jatin’ is about Jatindranath Mukherjee popularly known as Bagha Jatin- an Indian freedom fighter of the early 20th century. He belonged to a revolutionary group named Jugantar.
In this movie, Dev plays the role of Jatindranath Mukherjee. This movie portrays every important aspect of his life- how Jatindranath became Bagha Jatin in 1906, his personal life, his work with contemporary freedom fighters, his rise to a leadership role during the Alipore Bomb Case in 1908, his revolutionary activity till 1915 before becoming a martyr in the Battle of Balasore.
Barindra Ghosh to Rashbihari Bose, Manoranjan Sengupta to Kartar Singh- all have come to the screen in Baghajatin’s journey of struggle against British rule. In brief, the movie ‘Bagha Jatin’ shows the broader context of the Indian Independence movement through the life of Bagha Jatin.
Pros:
Director Arun Roy has presented the incredible life of Jatindranath Mukherjee exceptionally. Dev as Bagha Jatin is surprisingly fantastic. The acting of Sudipta Chakraborty in the role of Bagha Jatin’s Didi is assertive and impeccable. Sreeja Dutta- in the character of Jatindranath’s wife, has little screentime, however, she has also acted well. Carl A. Harte’s performance as Mr. Tergart is stellar. Rohaan Bhattacharya also deserves special mention.
The cinematography by Gopi Bhagat is praiseworthy. Neelayan Chatterjee’s background score is remarkable. Songs are extraordinary- especially Arijit Singh’s ‘Aasbo Phire’ and Rupam Islam’s ‘Desh Amar’ are very impactful.
Cons:
There are too many subplots in this movie. Those could have been reduced. The VFX is not so good- the graphics seem to be substandard in a few scenes.
Conclusion:
With a sparkle of Bengali emotion, ‘Bagha Jatin’ is an amalgamation of the glorious history of Bengali freedom fighters. Dev shines well in this movie. Apart from a few minor drawbacks, this movie is almost magical. Riding on the wave of patriotism, it is set to touch your mind. It’s a must-watch movie for sure.
